Fosi Audio BT20A MAX: Bluetooth 6.0 Class-D stereo amp with remote and subwoofer output

The BT20A MAX is Fosi’s top model in the BT20A line. It uses the TPA3255 chip, a Qualcomm QCC3095 Bluetooth 6.0 receiver with LDAC and the aptX family, two RCA inputs, a subwoofer output, an IR remote and a motorized volume knob. Our BT20A MAX vs BT20A Pro vs AIYIMA A07 Pro guide compares the three small Bluetooth amps spec by spec.

What it offers

  • Power: Fosi rates it at 300 W x 2 maximum and 180 W x 2 RMS at 4 ohm (manufacturer claims). THD+N of 0.003% or lower and SNR of 112 dB or higher are also Fosi’s figures.
  • Bluetooth 6.0 with SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, aptX Lossless and LDAC. How well it works depends on what your phone supports: iPhones use AAC, not LDAC.
  • Inputs: RCA1, RCA2 and Bluetooth. There is no USB, optical or coaxial input, so a TV that only has optical or HDMI out cannot connect directly.
  • Outputs and controls: speaker outputs and a subwoofer output, a selectable high-pass mode for the main speakers, a bass/treble tone mode with a bypass, and a 12 V trigger.
  • Built-in fan that runs whenever the amp is on (SoundPhile). DC input range 32 to 48 V, sold with a 48 V/5 A supply. Warranty: 24 months.

Who it’s for

Phone-to-speaker listening with a modest subwoofer, a second system, or a step up from a soundbar. If you want a balanced input or USB, look at the Fosi ZA3 (balanced input, no DAC) or the AIYIMA A80 (USB, optical and coaxial inputs).

Who should skip it

Skip it if you need a USB, optical or coaxial input, a balanced input, a headphone output or a silent case. Independent reviewers also report that the case runs warm at idle.

Common questions

Does the BT20A MAX use the TPA3255? Yes, per Fosi’s page.

What changed from the BT20A Pro? Per Fosi’s pages the MAX adds Bluetooth 6.0 (the Pro has 5.0 with SBC and AAC), more codecs including LDAC, an IR remote with a motorized volume knob, a second RCA input, a subwoofer output and a fan.

Which power supply does it use? Fosi sells it with a 48 V/5 A supply and states a 32 to 48 V DC input range.

What owners report

  • Phone to speakers over Bluetooth. Owners use the MAX mostly for wireless listening, often with a modest subwoofer, as a second system or a step up from a soundbar.
  • Wide codec support. LDAC and the aptX family are uncommon on a small amp at this price; the result depends on your phone.
  • Remote and motorized volume are convenient from the couch.

Critical notes

  • No Wi-Fi streaming. Owners who want it feed the MAX from a streamer such as the Fosi Audio S3 over RCA.
  • No USB, optical, coaxial or balanced input.
  • The fan runs whenever the amp is on and the case runs warm at idle (SoundPhile). Customer reviews on Fosi's own store page also mention the fan, so leave room for airflow.
  • A pop at power-off appears in Audio Science Review's power-cycle tests.
  • Bluetooth quality depends on the codecs your phone supports.
