Why it matters
Before the TPA3255, budget Class-D amps had a reputation problem — harsh, “digital” sounding, unable to drive real speakers. The TPA3255 changed that by combining 4 × 150W per channel maximum output with genuinely low distortion (below 0.005% THD at moderate power), high 90dB+ dynamic range, and a small, cool-running form factor.
Where you’ll find it
Nearly every Class-D amp in the budget hi-fi conversation uses the TPA3255: AIYIMA A80, AIYIMA A20 MONO, Fosi ZA3, Fosi BT20A MAX, 3e Audio A7. Higher-end implementations pair it with PFFB (Post-Filter Feedback) circuitry for even lower distortion under real speaker loads.
What determines real-world quality
The TPA3255 chip itself is just the amplifier stage. The actual sound depends on the surrounding circuit: power supply quality (a proper 48V linear or GaN supply beats a cheap switching brick), input buffer op-amps, PFFB implementation, output filter topology, and cabinet design. Two amps using the same TPA3255 chip can sound noticeably different.
How much power do you really get
The marketing “300W per channel” spec assumes 4Ω load, 48V rail, and 10% THD. Real music listening at reasonable distortion (< 1%) gives you about 100-150W per channel at 4Ω with a good 48V supply. Still plenty for any normal room and sensitivity 85dB+ bookshelf speakers.
