Bit Depth (16-bit vs 24-bit)

TL;DR

Bit depth determines the dynamic range of a digital audio signal. 16-bit (CD quality) has 96 dB dynamic range. 24-bit (hi-res) has 144 dB - overkill for playback but useful during recording/mixing.

Bit depth is the number of bits used to represent each audio sample. Each additional bit doubles the resolution and adds 6 dB of theoretical dynamic range.

  • 16-bit = CD quality, 96 dB dynamic range – covers full range of loudest orchestra to soft whisper
  • 24-bit = “hi-res” standard, 144 dB dynamic range – well beyond human hearing ceiling
  • 32-bit float = studio recording standard for headroom during mixing

Does bit depth matter for listening?

For playback, 16-bit is enough. Human ears max out around 120 dB of dynamic range in perfect conditions. 24-bit gives room for mixing headroom but adds nothing audible during playback unless you play music at insane volumes in an anechoic chamber.
