Preamp vs Amp vs Integrated

TL;DR

A preamp handles input switching, volume control, and signal buffering. A power amp does the heavy lifting to drive speakers. An integrated amp combines both in one box. Most budget audiophile amps (AIYIMA A80, Fosi ZA3) are integrated — one box does it all.

A traditional hi-fi audio chain has three separate stages: source → preamp → power amp → speakers. Understanding what each does helps you decide what to buy.

Preamplifier (preamp)

  • Selects between input sources (turntable, CD, streamer, TV)
  • Controls volume
  • Provides tone controls (bass/treble)
  • Buffers the signal at line level for the power amp
  • Does NOT drive speakers — outputs a small line-level signal

Power amplifier

  • Takes the line-level signal from the preamp
  • Amplifies it to speaker-driving levels (watts of power)
  • Usually has just one input (from the preamp) — no volume control, no source switching

Integrated amplifier

  • Both preamp + power amp in one box
  • Simpler, cheaper, more compact
  • Most budget audiophile amps are integrated
