Voltage rail (in amp power supplies)

TL;DR

Voltage rail is the DC voltage supplied to an amplifier's output stage from its power supply. Higher voltage rail = more maximum power output. For TPA3255 amps, the standard rail is 48V; some designs push to 51V for extra headroom.

Voltage rail is the DC supply voltage that powers an amplifier’s output transistors. Higher rail voltage = higher potential peak output voltage into the speaker.

TPA3255 rail behavior

The TPA3255 chip is rated for supply voltage from 12V to 53V. Standard operation is 48V – this is what the “300W per channel at 10% THD” spec assumes.

  • 36V rail: about 100W per channel
  • 48V rail: about 150W per channel clean (300W at 10% THD)
  • 51V rail: absolute maximum, ~10% more headroom

Practical implications

Stock 48V power supply is standard and correct. Some enthusiasts try 51V supplies for marginal gains – not worth the risk of overload. Focus on current capability instead: 5A vs 10A matters more than 48V vs 51V for real-world dynamics. See 48V Power Supply.
