Streamer (network audio player)

A streamer (or “network audio player” / “network transport”) is a dedicated device that:

• Connects to your home Wi-Fi or Ethernet
• Runs streaming service apps (Spotify, Tidal, Qobuz, Apple Music)
• Reads local files from NAS drives
• Sends digital audio to a DAC via USB/coaxial/optical, or to an amp via RCA/XLR analog

Streamer vs streamer+DAC

Pure streamers output digital only – you supply the DAC. Streamer+DAC combos (like the Fosi Audio S3) do both. Combos are simpler and cheaper; pure streamers give upgrade flexibility.

Streamer vs integrated amp with streaming

Some integrated amps have streaming built-in (WiiM Amp, NAD C 700). Simpler; less upgrade flexibility. Separate streamer + amp = best of both worlds.
