Spotify Connect

TL;DR

Spotify Connect is Spotify's wireless streaming protocol - lets you cast from the Spotify app to compatible speakers over Wi-Fi. Streams up to 320 kbps Ogg Vorbis (Premium). Different from Bluetooth (better quality, higher bandwidth).

Spotify Connect is Spotify’s network audio streaming protocol. Your phone or laptop pushes playback control to a Spotify Connect-compatible receiver, which pulls the actual audio stream from Spotify servers over your Wi-Fi.

Advantages over Bluetooth

  • Higher quality (320 kbps Ogg Vorbis vs 256 kbps SBC/AAC)
  • Phone can leave the room without disrupting playback
  • Multiple devices can control the same playback
  • No battery drain on your phone

Where you’ll find it

Fosi Audio S3, WiiM streamers, Sonos, most modern AVRs. Requires Spotify Premium subscription.

Spotify Lossless

Spotify Lossless (2025+ rollout) upgrades quality from Ogg Vorbis to FLAC over Spotify Connect on compatible devices. Approaches Tidal/Qobuz territory.
