SBC (Subband Coding) is the mandatory baseline Bluetooth audio codec - every Bluetooth device supports it. Sound quality is mediocre (~192-345 kbps effective rate) with audible artifacts on complex material. Use AAC/aptX/LDAC when available.

When SBC gets used
When no better codec is available or when negotiation fails between devices. On Android, force LDAC or aptX-HD in developer options. On iOS you get AAC (no aptX or LDAC support).
Practical impact
Consumer earbuds and speakers up to ~$200 often only support SBC + AAC. Serious hi-fi Bluetooth (like AIYIMA A80) supports aptX-HD and LDAC for near-lossless quality.
