IEM (In-Ear Monitor)

An IEM (In-Ear Monitor) is a headphone with a small driver that sits in the ear canal, sealed with silicone or foam tips. Originally created for stage musicians (in-ear monitoring mixed audio) – now dominant in portable listening.

The Chi-Fi IEM boom

Since ~2018, brands like KZ, Moondrop, 7Hz, Truthear, and Simgot have flooded the market with $30-$300 IEMs that compete with $1000+ IEMs of a decade ago. Community sites like r/headphones and Head-Fi driven the discovery.
