HDMI eARC
HDMI eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) sends hi-res audio from your TV back to an amplifier or soundbar via the same HDMI cable that delivers video. eARC supports lossless Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, unlike the older HDMI ARC which only handled compressed formats.
HDMI eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) is the successor to HDMI ARC. It lets your TV send audio BACK to a connected amplifier, soundbar, or receiver via the same HDMI cable that delivers video. eARC uses HDMI 2.1 bandwidth to carry lossless surround formats.
Why eARC matters vs regular HDMI ARC
- eARC: lossless Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, 24-bit / 192 kHz PCM up to 7.1 channels
- ARC (older): only compressed Dolby Digital, DTS, stereo PCM
Why it matters for budget hi-fi
If you use your hi-fi speakers as TV speakers too, HDMI eARC is a killer feature. One cable to your TV = full-quality audio + video sync + TV remote controls volume. No optical cable (which is limited to compressed 5.1) needed.
Where you’ll find it in budget hi-fi
HDMI eARC is rare in budget audio. The Fosi Audio S3 HiFi Streamer has it — genuinely killer feature at sub-$300 price point. Most other budget amps (including the excellent AIYIMA A80) only have optical, which is limited to compressed formats.
