Frequency Response

TL;DR

Frequency response describes how a component reproduces different frequencies of the audible range (typically 20 Hz - 20 kHz). Flat frequency response means all frequencies are reproduced at equal level; uneven response colors the sound.

Frequency response is a plot showing how loudly a component reproduces each frequency across the audio band. Specified as: frequency range +/- deviation in dB (e.g., “20 Hz – 20 kHz +/- 1 dB”).

Reading a spec

  • +/- 3 dB or better – typical excellent hi-fi component
  • +/- 1 dB – reference-tier flat response
  • Deviations of +/- 5 dB or more become clearly audible as tonal balance shifts

Where it matters most

Speakers – biggest source of frequency response deviation in your system. Room acoustics + speaker design combine.

Headphones – each model has a distinct FR “signature” (bright, neutral, warm, V-shaped).

Amps / DACs – modern designs are typically flat +/- 0.5 dB across the audio band – not a differentiator.
