Z-height (soundstage depth)

Z-height refers to the perceived depth/front-to-back dimension of a stereo soundstage. Well-recorded music with good speaker placement gives the illusion of instruments at different depths - some near the speakers, others "behind" them. Also called "soundstage depth" or "layering".
Z-height (or “soundstage depth” or “Z-axis”) describes the front-to-back dimension of a stereo image – how much the illusion of instrumental positioning extends toward or beyond the speakers.
What creates good Z-height
- Well-recorded stereo material (jazz trios, acoustic ensembles, live concert recordings)
- Speakers positioned away from front wall (30-50 cm minimum)
- Absorptive treatment on the front wall
- Coherent-source speakers (single point-source drivers like KEF Uni-Q, planars)
- Low noise floor and low speaker distortion (reveals subtle reverb tails that convey depth)
Common z-height killers
- Speakers pushed against the front wall (kills reverb tail illusion)
- Multi-mic’d pop/rock recordings (mixed for punch, not depth)
- Bright or forward speakers (everything sounds “in your face”)
Budget hi-fi that images well
