Oversampling (in DACs)
Oversampling is a technique where a DAC processes audio at a multiple of the original sample rate (e.g., 8x, 32x). Allows gentler analog filters and can push quantization noise out of the audible band. Fundamental to Delta-Sigma DAC operation.
Oversampling is a digital signal processing technique where the DAC internally processes audio at a rate much higher than the source sample rate. A 44.1 kHz source might be oversampled to 352.8 kHz (8x) or 1.4 MHz (32x) internally.
Why oversample
- Allows gentler analog low-pass reconstruction filter (higher rate = higher cutoff = less phase distortion in audio band)
- Enables noise shaping – pushes quantization noise above 22 kHz where it’s inaudible
- Fundamental to how Delta-Sigma DACs work
NOS (Non-Oversampling) DACs
Some audiophile R2R DACs intentionally skip oversampling – claimed to sound more “natural” but requires steep analog filter or accepts some ultrasonic content. Debated in the audiophile community.
