Open-back vs Closed-back headphones
TL;DR
Open-back headphones have perforated ear cups - air moves freely, giving wider soundstage but no isolation (leaks in AND out). Closed-back cups are sealed - blocks external noise, keeps sound in, but narrower stage. Different tools for different jobs.
Open-back headphones have perforated or grille ear cups. Air moves freely between the driver and outside world.
Closed-back headphones have sealed ear cups. The driver’s rear wave is contained inside the cup.
Open-back trade-offs
- + Wider, more speaker-like soundstage
- + Less driver resonance, cleaner mids
- – Zero isolation – leaks sound to and from environment
- – Only for quiet solo listening (home office, quiet room)
Closed-back trade-offs
- + Isolation for commuting, gym, shared workspace
- + Bass extension often deeper (sealed enclosure)
- – Narrower stage, more “in your head” feel
- – Can have midrange coloration from cup resonance
Semi-open
Middle ground – some driver leak but partial isolation. FiiO EH11 is open-back retro; Soundcore Space One Pro is closed-back with ANC.
