Headphone amp (dedicated)
A dedicated headphone amp is designed specifically to drive headphones with clean voltage/current. Better than phone/laptop outputs for demanding planar magnetic or high-impedance headphones. Often combined with a DAC in one box.
A headphone amp is a specialized amplifier optimized for the impedance range and current draw of headphones – not speakers. Delivers cleaner sound than the built-in headphone jack on phones or laptops, especially for demanding headphones.
When you need one
- Planar magnetic headphones (HiFiMAN, Audeze) – need significant current
- High-impedance headphones (150Ω+) – need voltage swing
- Reference monitoring – want zero coloration from the amp stage
When you don’t need one
Sensitive IEMs and 32Ω consumer headphones sound fine from phones and laptops. A dedicated amp adds convenience (single dial, always-on) more than sonic improvement.
