Google Cast for Audio is the underlying protocol behind Chromecast Audio - lets you stream audio from Android apps to compatible speakers over Wi-Fi. Different from AirPlay 2 (Apple ecosystem).

Google Cast for Audio is the protocol behind Chromecast Audio streaming. Apps that support “Casting” push audio from your phone/tablet/browser to compatible receivers over Wi-Fi.

Audio quality

Depends on the source app. Spotify Cast tops out at 320 kbps Ogg Vorbis (Premium). Some apps stream up to 24-bit / 96 kHz FLAC. Not all Cast receivers support all quality tiers.

Multi-room

Cast supports synchronized multi-room playback (Google speaker groups). Similar functionality to AirPlay 2 but from the Android side.

Compatible receivers

Fosi Audio S3, WiiM Ultra/Pro, older Chromecast Audio pucks (discontinued), Nest speakers, JBL/Sony/LG Cast-enabled speakers.
