Damping Factor
TL;DR
Damping factor is the ratio of speaker impedance to amp output impedance. Higher damping factor means the amp controls the speaker cone better - especially important for bass tightness. Anything over 50 is generally sufficient.
Damping factor measures how well an amplifier controls the driver cone’s inertial motion after the signal stops. Formula: speaker impedance / amp output impedance. A speaker at 8Ω on an amp with 0.1Ω output impedance = damping factor of 80.
What it audibly affects
- Bass tightness – higher damping = quicker start/stop of bass notes
- Cone control – amp resists back-EMF from moving cone
Realistic values
- Below 10 – loose, uncontrolled bass (some vintage tube amps)
- 50-100 – excellent, indistinguishable from higher values
- Over 500 – specification chest-thumping, no audible improvement
