Speaker Sensitivity

TL;DR

Speaker sensitivity is a measure of how loud a speaker plays given a fixed amount of amplifier power (expressed as dB/W/m). A 90 dB sensitivity speaker plays 3 dB louder than an 87 dB speaker with the same amp — significant! Low-sensitivity speakers (below 85 dB) need meaningful amp power to shine.

Speaker sensitivity (also called efficiency) measures how loud a speaker plays for a given amount of amplifier power. It’s expressed as dB SPL at 1 meter with 1 watt of input (dB / W / m or dB / 2.83V / m).

Why it matters

  • 90 dB sensitivity speaker + 100W amp = same loudness as 93 dB speaker + 50W amp
  • Every 3 dB of sensitivity = amp needs half the power for the same loudness
  • Low-sensitivity speakers (below 85 dB) need meaningful amp power to sound dynamic

Sensitivity ranges

  • Very high (95+ dB) — horn-loaded speakers (Klipsch), some vintage designs. Any low-power amp works.
  • High (90-94 dB) — most modern bookshelves like Klipsch RP-500M II (90 dB range). Match well with modest Class-D amps.
  • Medium (85-89 dB) — typical for most budget audiophile speakers. Need at least 50W per channel from a modern amp.
  • Low (below 85 dB) — many planar/electrostatic speakers, some low-efficiency 2-way designs. Need 100W+ of clean amp power.

Real-world example
