LDAC is a hi-res Bluetooth audio codec developed by Sony and now included in Android 8.0+ as part of the standard Bluetooth stack. It transmits audio at up to 990 kbps — roughly 3× the bit rate of standard Bluetooth SBC and higher than aptX-HD.

Why it matters

Standard Bluetooth audio (SBC) compresses music heavily and produces audible artifacts on complex or high-frequency content. LDAC transmits enough data that (in ideal conditions) it’s functionally indistinguishable from a wired connection for most listeners.

Notably absent: Apple / iPhone does not support LDAC. iOS is limited to AAC (which is still quite good).

How to actually use it

LDAC has three modes: Priority Sound (990 kbps), Balanced (660 kbps), Priority Connection (330 kbps). Android automatically picks the mode based on signal strength. Force Priority Sound in Android developer options for maximum quality.
